Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic reboot in development
The thing about Star
Wars video game rumours is that you not only have the usual games
industry leakers pitching in, but also movie sources that don't usually
deal with games; especially since Lucasfilm insist on all their Star
Wars media being officially canon.
A remake or reboot of Knights Of The Old Republic has been talked about for years but the problem is that all of the games, and that whole era of Star Wars fiction, was de-canonised when the sequel trilogy of movies started.
However, with the release of The Rise Of Skywalker an important element of Knights Of The Old Republic lore was referenced for the first time. It was only in the name of a Sith Trooper legion and a pendant - which fans only found out about via tie-in books - but Revan is now officially 'real' again.
That alone gives
hope for a remake or reboot and the latter seems to be what movie site
Cinelinx - which claims to have previously had the scoop about Ewan
McGregor returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi - has heard is happening.
They refer to it as a 're-imagining', as the new game would integrate
elements from the first two games into a new title that would act as a
quasi-sequel. Which seems a logical way to approach things, given how
old the originals are.
According to the site a remake was first mooted in 2015 and then put on
the 'back-burner', presumably because of the release of The Force
A new Knights Of The Old Republic game does seem a no-brainer though, as
not only is it one of the most popular Star Wars games - especially in
terms of inventing its own lore - but publisher EA own the Star Wars
licence and original developer BioWare.
But of course, open goals are one thing the video games industry loves to ignore and nothing official has ever been heard about a new game.
mentions vague rumours of other new Star Wars game, including the
already rumoured Project Luminous title, an inevitable Fallen Order
sequel, and 'something on the Switch'.
There's no indication when any of these might come out though - and no
mention of any tie-ins to any of the Disney+ shows or new movies (which
are now rumoured to take place in the High Republic era, midway between
the existing films and Knights Of The Old Republic).
But with Fallen Order establishing that EA can make a decent Star Wars game when they put their minds to it more games are clearly inevitable at this point.
